What is something your heart craves this time of year? What is your absolute favorite thing to do when autumn arrives?

Taking time to envision these simple moments helps us gently transition out of the high energy rush of summer and step mindfully into fall. Whether you’re recreating your family’s favorite traditions or creating brand new ones with the people you love, autumn invites us to step outside the box and make this season even more nourishing than the last.

For me, I love to officially welcome fall into my life with the simplest ritual: throwing on a cozy sweatshirt and leggings as soon as the temperatures start to dip. On September 22nd, the official first day of fall, I put on a sweatshirt and leggings before heading out the door. Stepping outside into that cool, crisp breeze immediately made me smile. I could literally smell fall in the air, even under the darker morning sky.

So often, when people think of fall, they think of gloomy, sad, or depressing weather. But what if we shift our mindset?

Instead of seeing gloom, try seeing comfort. Think of the weather cooling down, the leaves turning brilliant shades of red, brown, and gold, and the comforting aroma of warm, pumpkin baked goods. Breathe in that gentle nip in the air and let the rich autumn colors swirling around you ground your spirit. Taking a moment to truly pause and breathe in a new season helps free your mind, reminding you to take a deep breath and trust that everything will be alright.

The changing of seasons can bring quiet, unrecognized stress to our bodies and minds. Creating intentional, low tox autumn rituals is a beautiful way to release that tension, protect your physical well being, and fully embrace the warmth of the season ahead.

1. Shift Your Sensory Environment (Without the Toxins)

When we think of autumn, we think of cinnamon, spice, and warm vanilla. But traditional autumn candles and air fresheners often fill our homes with synthetic fragrances and phthalates. Swap heavy artificial scents for non toxic soy or beeswax candles scented with pure essential oils (like clove, sweet orange, and cedarwood), or simmer a pot on the stove with apple slices, cinnamon sticks, and star anise. You get all the cozy comfort without overloading your indoor air quality.

2. Nourish from the Inside Out

As the weather cools, our body naturally craves warmth and grounding foods. Nourish your vessel by swapping cold iced drinks for warm herbal teas, golden milk, or spiced rooibos. Incorporate seasonal root vegetables, squash, and warm pumpkin bakes made with simple, wholesome ingredients that soothe your digestion and keep your energy steady.

3. Layer Softly & Protect Your Skin

Transitioning to cooler weather can dry out our skin. Keep your body care simple and low tox by switching to rich, natural moisture, like pure shea butter, jojoba oil, or beef tallow balm, after a warm shower. Layer up in comfortable, breathable fabrics like soft cotton sweatshirts and cozy leggings that let your body rest and breathe.

Changing seasons doesn't have to feel overwhelming. By shifting your mindset, honoring what your heart craves, and nourishing your body with simple, low tox care, you can step into this new season feeling restored, grounded, and truly home.

Sincerely,
